Hiring a Nutrition Professional | Influencer or Coach?

When looking to hire someone to help with your nutrition, fitness, business development… basically anything, you have more than a few options thanks to the wide reaches of social media these days. It’s unfair to be so cut and dry about things, but in general, I think people fall into two categories, Coach or Influencer. Let me tell you my definitions for each so our terms are clear.
___
Coach:
A person looking to help others improve through teaching an area of expertise
___
Influencer:
Someone trying to generate as much attention as possible to create impact
___
This post might ruffle some feathers so let’s get a few things clear. People are neither ALL Coach or ALL influencer. When you decide to take your business into the social media landscape, you are 100% taking on at least some role as an Influencer. That said, there are some signs we suggest you look for when deciding to hire someone to help any aspect of your life.
___
Hire people who:

👍🏻 Use credible sources to back up claims
👍🏻 Recognize that things are rarely are as simple as Yes/No, but instead applies context to each question
👍🏻 Make client success the focus of their content instead of themselves
___
Run quickly away from people who:

👎🏻 Deal exclusively in absolutes where something is always good or always bad
👎🏻 Intentionally avoid providing evidence to support their opinions
👎🏻 Make themselves the focus of ALL their content
___
There are some truly great people that we would probably classify as Influencers. I have no issue with people who are using their fame and platform to educate with reason, logic and compassion. However, more and more there are people that are looking to exploit their position to make a quick easy $$$, leaving real coaches to clean up their mess and explain that “No, the Snake Oil Diet is not a good idea.”
